The robot performed a full-fledged operation, without human intervention

The Smart Tissue robot was developed by a team of scientists from Johns Hopkins University and existed back in 2016. Then, it was less sensitive and it needed more guidance from a person at different stages of activity. Since then, the research team has added new capabilities and features aimed at independent work. Roughly speaking, scientists had to teach the system to make decisions on its own and change the algorithm for subsequent actions. This is due to the fact that surgery is very complex and unpredictable, so it is impossible to work according to only one plan.

The team of specialists has been able to improve the robot, increasing its surgical accuracy using new imaging systems and suture instruments. Scientists have built into their invention a tracking algorithm based on machine learning and a special three-dimensional endoscope.

The operation on a pig, which was carried out during the study, was carried out by a robot completely autonomously, and its results were amazingly successful. The curators of the project say that laparoscopic surgery is one of the most complex areas of medicine, requiring incredible precision. The experiment showed that the developed surgical system can perform it at a higher level than a person can do. Such success is due to the fact that the automatic "hand" of the robot cannot tremor, unlike the surgeon's hand.

Scientists managed to create the first robotic system capable of planning, adapting the operation plan and performing the necessary sequence of actions. The curators of the project believe that the study could be a breakthrough in soft tissue surgery and soon such a robot will be able to perform other operations, for example, remove malignant tumors through incisions.
